Are you thinking about sewing, but don’t know where to start? Do you have a vision in your head of a beautiful dress or a hand sewn bag, but feel it’s too complicated? Relax - everyone started at some point. And you don’t need to have a machine right away to feel the joy of sewing! This post is a practical guide for absolute beginners. Step by step we show you how to put up your first stitches - simply, without stress and with a smile😊 What is actually a die-cut?

1. start by hand (literally!)

🧵 Yes, you can sew by hand - and not just buttons. Faststitch, stitch behind the needle or covered stitch are the basics, which are enough to sew a simple cosmetic bag, pouch or case.

✅ What do you need?

  • needle and thread (preferably contrasting to see progress),
  • fabric (such as cotton),
  • scissors,
  • A centimeter and... patience.

This is a great form of training - you will learn how to guide the stitch, control the tension of the thread and learn about the structure of the material.

2. choose a simple die-cut for your size and ability

Don’t throw yourself into a blazer right away😉 To start with, an elastic band, a simple skirt with elastic band or a strapless top would be ideal. On WearMeUp.Club you’ll also find patterns ideal for beginners - look for those marked with one button.

3. learn how to use the machine (once you have it)

If you are planning to buy a machine - great! But you don’t have to have a model for several thousand zlotys. For beginners, a machine with basic stitches - straight, zigzag and elastic stitch (if you want to sew knitted fabrics) is enough.

📌 Important: before you sew your first project, learn how to thread the thread, change the tension or replace the needle and foot. You can find all this in the machine’s manual.

4. learn the basic techniques

You don’t have to know everything right away. But it’s worth knowing:

  • What incisions are,
  • How to iron a seam,
  • How to curl the edge of the fabric,
  • Why decatization matters (check out our post "Decatization IS OBLIGATORY"!).

You can find all this information on our blog😊 And if you want to stay up to date and grow with us be sure to sign up for our newsletter - a solid dose of knowledge, without spamming!

5. sew for pleasure, not perfection

The biggest mistake beginners make is wanting to sew like a pro... right away, already, immediately. Meanwhile, sewing is a process, and mistakes and errors are part and parcel of learning. Forgive yourself for uneven stitches, crooked stitches - and enjoy your progress.

🔍 The joy of sewing doesn’t start with a machine. It starts with the decision that you want to try. From the first hand stitch, from piecing together a pattern, from the idea of a simple project. Start small - and before you know it, you’ll be sewing things you’re proud of 💛

Decatization IS OBLIGATORY

Decatization is something you can’t see - but if you skip it, you may regret it! What is it? It’s the preparation of the fabric for sewing so that your project doesn’t shrink, deform or waste the die-cut.
